One Big Holiday, 2017
February 4 - 8, 2017
Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya
Riveria Maya, Mexico
Two unforgettable One Big Holiday's followed by a year off in 2016 set the stage for yet another epic getaway in Mexico! Back at the same place where we started out, My Morning Jacket was joined by a stellar lineup of support that included Gary Clark Jr., The Head & The Heart, Kurt Vile & The Violators, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Deer Tick, Lucius, Carl Broemel, and Tune-Yards (DJ Set). With a collection of both new and old friends, we enjoyed 4 amazing nights of music in paradise along with specially curated activities, another Super Bowl Fiesta, and other bits of fun that made our adventure so special.
Being the home of two previous One Big Holidays, the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya can boast a rock history of it’s own to go along with all the memorabilia of rock n roll past plastered amongst the property. So when the music began the first night with Lucius, the mood was already set for another run of musical magic in Mexico. The sweet harmonies of Jesse Wolfe and Holly Laessig fronting the infectious dance grooves if this exciting band proved a great warm up for the music that was to come. My Morning Jacket’s first show began with their live debut of “This Land is Your Land” with the help of members of Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Lucius, before moving into a set of mainly throwback favorites including “I’m Amazed”, “X-Mas Curtain”, and “What a Wonderful Man” that mixed nicely with covers that included The Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun” and Prince’s “Purple Rain.” The show ended with an 8 song encore capped off by a special guest filled cover of Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone”.
With our first day in the books, our second day brought a full afternoon of vacation enjoyment before we gathered at the Lagoon for some football! Louisville’s Butchertown Grocery helped provide the grub as we enjoyed some good company for the big game between the Falcons and the Patriots. The setup was perfect, big screens on the beach as the sun set, the stage just off in the distance reminding us what was ahead. Following our football fiesta, Preservation Hall Jazz Band treated us to a short but fun show, that featured a surprise entrance from Jim James. Jim didn’t wander far from the stage however, as My Morning Jacket came out shortly after and scored musical touchdown after touchdown during another amazing show. Coming out of the gate with new favorite “Tropics (Erase Traces)”, the host band kept the collaboration spirit going with more guest spots from Preservation Hall and Lucius on David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and Chuck Berry songs, as well as even more Beatles and Prince covers. But it was their original songs that really provided the core of set, with cuts like “It Beats 4 U”, “Dondante” and “Anytime” sending undeniable energy into the Caribbean air.
Day 3 may have been a day off for My Morning Jacket, but there was still plenty of excitement to be had! While some were out at the pool, others were playing in the One Big Holiday Poker Tournament with Bo and Carl, others were off exploring on excursions. A stripped down, sunset show from Deer Tick out at the Lagoon was the perfect beginning to another great night of tunes. The evening continued with a show from the ever rising Kurt Vile & The Violators, displaying a keen mix of creativity in both lyrics and song structure. Guitar guru Gary Clark Jr. then set the courtyard ablaze with his rocking riffs and hard rock does the blues sound.
The last day of One Big Holiday rolled around and while we had a busy first 72 hours, we were more than ready to soak in every last moment of vacation bliss that we could! After another great afternoon of sunshine and relaxation, the music started with a “solo” set from Carl Broemel, a display of his solo career with the much welcomed help of some of this MMJ bandmates. Following a dinner break, we met back in the courtyard for a show from The Head and The Heart. A perfect tune up and ease-in for what would prove to be an unforgettable My Morning Jacket show, we sang along to Tom Petty and Crowed House covers along with anthems of their own including “Rivers and Roads” and “Lost in My Mind”. After opening their final show with “Circuital”, Jacket broke into a trio of “The Waterfall” tracks highlighted by a powerful “In Its Infancy”. The middle of set featured “The Way That He Sings”, “Evil Urges” and “Mahgeetah” among others before another strong encore showing with sit-ins from Lucius. An explosive “One Big Holiday” ended what was an unbelievable four days of great music, great weather, and great people. Then the fireworks over the sea to put the icing on the cake made for an excellent final touch.
They say third time is a charm, and while the first two One Big Holidays were nothing short of amazing, there was something particularly special about this one. Thank you all for joining in the fun! Now go ahead and “Give Peace a Chance…”
